Mass Unemployment from AI Still a Distant Concern

Recent research from Scale AI and the Center for AI Safety tested six AI models on 240 tasks from Upwork across areas like writing, design, and data analysis. It was observed from the results that AI models have failed to complete most of the tasks.

As it stands, the top performer, Manus, has only completed 2.5% of the tasks, earning just $1,810 from a potential $143,991. To this end, it has also been discovered that AI models were better at simple tasks, like generating logos, but struggled with more complex ones, such as multi-step workflows or using judgment. Therefore, it has been suggested that AI replacement for freelancers in the future is far from happening.

Artificial Intelligence Struggles with Reasoning and News Reporting

At the moment, Artificial intelligence is still struggling to understand the world the way humans do. With regard to this statement, recent research from MIT has shown that humans excel more at tasks that require understanding the environment and planning actions, like navigating a pattern or solving puzzles.

AI, however, often fails in these areas, even with increased computing power. AI also fails at basic tasks like news reporting.

In a recent study by the BBC and European Broadcasting Union, it was discovered that 45% of AI-generated news had major issues, such as incorrect sourcing, outdated information, or hallucinated details. For instance, Gemini, one of the artificial intelligence models, performed the worst, with issues in 76% of its responses.

AI Cover Letters and Hiring Errors

Another downside of artificial intelligence is its impact on hiring processes. AI-generated cover letters have reduced the effectiveness of this tool. Research on Freelancer.com shows that skilled workers are now hired less frequently, while less qualified candidates are hired more. This undermines the original purpose of cover letters, which was to help employers find motivated and capable candidates. To this end, the resultant effect is that the use of Artificial intelligence in recruitment processes has created a problem of selecting the wrong personnel more often than the right people.

However, despite these challenges, AI has continued to evolve. Meanwhile, it still lacks the deeper understanding and reasoning abilities that humans apply to complex tasks. Though AI can handle simpler tasks, it has not proven to be a problem for jobs or an alternative to human creativity.
