Celo Blockchain Completes Move to Ethereum Layer-2

Celo blockchain has finally completed its shift to becoming an Ethereum layer-2 network after nearly two years of planning. The process started in July 2023 and included a community vote in July 2024.

To this end, the change allows Celo to offer faster and cheaper transactions while using Optimism’s OP Stack, a popular layer-2 technology.

A New Path for Layer-1 Blockchains

Celo’s move marks a major shift in the Ethereum ecosystem. Rene Reinsberg, CEO of the Celo Foundation, believes this transition could serve as a model for other blockchains that want to become layer-2 networks. Instead of creating a new blockchain, Celo preserved its history while upgrading its system.

Celo Blockchain Completes Move to Ethereum Layer-2

Other blockchain developers have shown interest in Celo’s approach. Reinsberg mentioned that many leaders from different layer-1 projects have asked about the transition process and the challenges involved. Therefore, this could suggest that more blockchain firms may consider using the same method in the future.

Impact on Celo Users and Ethereum’s Ecosystem

For regular users, the shift to layer-2 will not bring major changes to their daily experience. To this end, features like SocialConnect, which links phone numbers or social media handles to Celo wallets, will remain available. However, there are technical upgrades and adjustments, such as validators now managing community RPC nodes instead of operating the consensus protocol.

As it is, Ethereum has faced challenges, including slow transactions and competition from blockchains like Solana. Despite this, the CEO believes more layer-1 networks will consider moving to layer-2 as the market stabilizes. At this junction, he expects more public discussions and decisions from other blockchain teams in the near future.

To this end, Celo’s transition represents a big step in blockchain evolution. By improving transaction speed and efficiency, it sets an example for others considering a similar move.
