Thailand Takes a Step Toward Revitalizing Tourism

Thailand, in a recent update, is about to launch a new initiative called “TouristDigiPay,” which aims to attract more tourists by allowing them to convert their cryptocurrencies into Thai baht.

This 18-month project, developed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with the Ministry of Finance and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025.

As it stands, this innovative initiative comes at a crucial time for Thailand, as its tourism sector is struggling, particularly with a drop in visitors from major markets like China.

Merchants will receive payments in baht, and the system will adhere to Know Your Customer (KYC) rules and Customer Due Diligence requirements. To ensure security, there will be safeguards like spending caps and limits on cash withdrawals. To this end, this project is part of Thailand’s plan to integrate cryptocurrencies into the country’s financial system while ensuring both tourists and merchants are protected.

Crypto as a Solution for Thailand’s Declining Tourism

At the moment, foreign tourism in Thailand appears to be declining. However, this initiative was developed to address this issue, particularly the issue of the fall in the number of tourists from East Asia and China. In 2025, Thailand has seen a 5% drop in tourism. This sharp decline in visitors is from several parts of the world, especially China, a key market for the country.

To this end, the SEC believes that allowing tourists to use cryptocurrency could make Thailand more competitive and appealing to tech-savvy visitors who prefer to use their digital assets.

Right now, Thailand isn’t the only country turning to cryptocurrency to boost tourism. Also, Bhutan has partnered with Binance Pay to enable tourists to pay with crypto, while the UAE has teamed up with Crypto.com to allow crypto payments for flights and in-flight services.

Put together, these examples show that cryptocurrency is becoming an increasingly important part of the global tourism landscape.
