Live Like Buffett: The 20-Slot Rule to Master Life and Success

In 1994, Charlie Munger, the right-hand man to investing legend Warren Buffett, addressed a USC Business School audience. Years of building Berkshire Hathaway into a powerhouse were under his belt. His talk, “Elementary Worldly Wisdom,” wasn’t just theory. Munger, midway through, unveiled a powerful strategy Buffett relied on for consistent success.

Warren Buffett’s “20-Slot” Rule Explained

When Warren Buffett lectures at business schools, he often shares a powerful piece of advice known as the “20-Slot” Rule. He says, “I could improve your ultimate financial welfare by giving you a ticket with only 20 slots on it. These 20 slots represent all the investments you can make in your lifetime. Once you’ve punched through all 20 slots, you cannot make any more investments.”

Buffett explains, “Under these conditions, you would think very carefully about each decision. You would be compelled to invest in only those opportunities you have thoroughly researched and believed in. As a result, you would likely achieve far better financial outcomes.”

This concept seems perfectly obvious to Buffett, and it is to me as well. However, this perspective is rarely emphasized in business education in the U.S. It goes against conventional wisdom.

To me, it is evident that success requires making selective and thoughtful bets. This has been clear to me from a very young age. I am puzzled as to why it isn’t as apparent to many others.

The Underrated Importance of Selective Focus

Warren Buffett’s “20-Slot” Rule is a valuable principle not only for financial investments but also for how we invest our time. What particularly resonated with me about Buffett’s strategy is his concept of “forcing yourself to load up” and fully committing to an investment.

The key takeaway is this:

Your odds of success significantly increase when you concentrate all your energy and attention on a few tasks.

To master a skill—truly master it—you must be highly selective with your time. This means ruthlessly trimming away good ideas to make room for great ones. It requires focusing on a few essential tasks and ignoring all distractions. You must be willing to commit to a long-term journey, often working through years of silence and solitude to achieve mastery.

In essence, the principle of selective focus emphasizes the importance of depth over breadth. By dedicating yourself to fewer pursuits, you can achieve greater depth of knowledge and skill, ultimately leading to more significant and impactful success. This disciplined approach is essential for anyone aiming to excel in their chosen field.

Simplify and Fully Commit

If you look around, you’ll notice that very few people truly commit to a single skill or goal for an extended period of time.

Instead of dedicating themselves fully to a goal for a year or two, most people try out a new diet, switch college majors, start a new exercise routine, experiment with a side business, or change careers for a few weeks or months before moving on to the next new thing.

From my experience, the lack of persistence in sticking with one thing for an extended period is so common that you can become very good—perhaps even world-class—in many areas with just one year of focused effort. If you view your life as a 20-slot punch card, with each slot representing a year or two of concentrated work, you can achieve significant success by fully committing to just a few endeavors.

The point is that everyone has a “life punch card,” and there aren’t many slots on that card. You only get so many punches in your lifetime. Unlike financial investments, your 20 “life slots” will be used up whether you like it or not. Time will pass regardless.

Don’t waste your next slot. Think carefully, make a decision, and go all in. Don’t just dabble—commit fully. Your final results will be a direct reflection of your prior commitment.
