On Friday, the prices of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose sharply following a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Powell in Wyoming. Powell hinted that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates, which caused investors to react positively in the crypto market.
Bitcoin and Ethereum’s Response to Powell’s Speech
Shortly after Powell began speaking, Bitcoin saw a price jump, moving from $112,000 to over $114,700, a nearly 2.5% increase. Ethereum also rose, going from $4,300 to $4,600, a gain of about 7%. However, despite the surge on Friday, both Bitcoin and Ethereum still recorded over 2.9% and 1.4% downside movement, respectively, for the week.
To this end, other cryptocurrencies, known as altcoins, also experienced significant increases. For instance, XRP and Solana both saw gains of more than 6% in under an hour, and Dogecoin rose over 7%. However, though some altcoins saw a sharp increase in price, on a general level, most of them are yet to fully recover from earlier losses. This reflects ongoing investor concerns about the Federal Reserve’s next steps.
Effect of Cut in Rate of Interest on the Crypto Market
A possible interest rate cut would likely benefit riskier assets like cryptocurrencies by increasing the amount of money available for investment. In recent times, President Donald Trump has been urging Powell to lower rates, citing concerns about a slowing economy. As it stands, statistics from a recent survey have shown that 87% of people now expect the Federal Reserve to adjust rates, up from 70% earlier this week.
However, despite all anticipations, Powell emphasized that inflation remains a concern, especially due to the impact of tariffs. In his statement, he made it known that the Federal Reserve is ready to adjust its policies if needed, but warned that inflation caused by tariffs could persist for several months.
Overall, Powell’s comments suggest that while the Federal Reserve may lower interest rates in the near future, it will take a meticulous approach.
