Bitcoin (BTC) Generates More Interest in Australia After US Approval of Spot BTC ETF

Nineteen percent of survey respondents expressed their willingness to invest in a spot Bitcoin ETF upon its listing on the Australian Securities Exchange.

After the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first eleven spot Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in the United States last month, interest in Bitcoin among Australian retail investors has surged.

This development has captured the attention of Australian investors, with 34% indicating awareness of the news. As a result, confidence in Bitcoin has risen, with 25% of Australians now holding a more positive view following the ETF approval.

Rising Ownership and Optimistic Sentiments

Recent data indicates that cryptocurrency awareness among Australians has reached a record high of 95%, up from 92% in 2022, marking a steady 5% increase over the past five years. Bitcoin remains the most recognized digital asset, with 93% of respondents familiar with it.

There’s been a notable shift in sentiment towards Bitcoin among older generations, with twice as many respondents aged 55 and older expressing a “more favorable perception” of the cryptocurrency compared to those with an unchanged but positive view.

The study highlights that 19% of respondents are willing to invest in a spot Bitcoin ETF if it were available on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

Additionally, 34% of respondents with self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) are interested in investing in Bitcoin, either through an ETF or a cryptocurrency exchange.

Demographic variances shape investment preferences. While 55% of Australians choose crypto exchanges, 45% opt for ETFs due to their convenience.

Notably, younger Australians tend to favor direct ownership via exchanges, whereas older generations lean towards ETFs.

Bitcoin Generates More Interest in Australia After US Approval of Spot BTC ETFWith anticipation mounting for the upcoming Bitcoin halving in April 2024, historically known to catalyze bullish market sentiment, Australian crypto investors are doubling down on BTC, with 41.4% intending to boost their exposure to the digital asset over the next year.

Persisting Challenges Amidst Rising Interest

Despite the uptick in ownership and a positive shift in sentiment, the overall perspective is not entirely sanguine. The report underscores ongoing concerns such as price volatility, insufficient consumer protections, and widespread uncertainty, which act as deterrents for potential investors considering entry into the cryptocurrency market.

Of those who abstain from crypto investments, 18% expressed a desire to participate but ultimately refrained due to economic uncertainties. Likewise, 18% of current crypto investors admitted to contemplating divestment from their holdings in response to the challenges posed by rising living costs and increasing interest rates.

Despite a challenging economic environment, Bitcoin exceeded expectations in 2023, surging by 156%. This performance, buoyed by anticipation surrounding the halving event and ETF approvals, signals a renewed sense of optimism surrounding the digital asset.
