In a harrowing turn of events tied to the volatile world of cryptocurrency, French police rescued a man on Saturday night in Essonne, just south of Paris, after he was reportedly kidnapped in a violent scheme meant to extort his millionaire son. The son, who has amassed significant wealth through cryptocurrency, was allegedly the target of a multi-million-euro ransom demand.
The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the details, revealing that the abduction occurred Thursday morning in the capital’s 14th arrondissement. According to an anonymous police source speaking to Agence France-Presse (AFP), four masked men seized the victim and forced him into a delivery van in broad daylight. In a swift response, authorities apprehended five individuals in their twenties, including one suspect who was behind the wheel of a vehicle linked to the abduction.
Crypto Ties Draw Blood: Ransom Scheme Targets Millionaire’s Father in Brutal Attack
Investigators believe the motive behind the gruesome crime was financial, aimed squarely at the victim’s son, who co-owns a Malta-registered cryptocurrency marketing firm with his father, according to a police source. The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of €5 million to €7 million (\$5.7 million to \$7.9 million), as detailed by Le Parisien. Authorities revealed that one of the man’s fingers had been severed, and sources close to the investigation said law enforcement acted swiftly to prevent further harm.
This case adds to a troubling pattern of violence targeting those linked to the crypto industry. In January, David Balland, co-founder of the billion-euro crypto firm Ledger, was kidnapped alongside his wife. He also suffered the loss of a finger, and his wife was later discovered tied up in a car trunk in Essonne.
That attack led to the indictment of nine individuals, including a 26-year-old previously arrested for abduction. In a similarly disturbing incident earlier that month, the father of a Dubai-based crypto influencer, aged 56, was found crammed in a car boot near Mans after a ransom demand. These chilling events underscore a rising threat in France: the increasing physical risks faced by those with significant cryptocurrency holdings or associations.
