Zcash Eyes 3x Faster Private Payments as ZEC Hits New All-Time High Above $1,500

Zcash is entering a major transition as developers prepare a network upgrade that could cut block times by two-thirds, while ZEC has surged to a new all-time high above $1,500. The rally comes as demand for Grayscale’s Zcash ETF grows and the privacy-focused cryptocurrency prepares for its next major protocol change.

ZEC was trading around $1,550 on September 19, according to CoinMarketCap data, after climbing more than 33% over the previous seven days. TradingView data shows the token reaching a fresh all-time high of about $1,588.88 on September 19, putting Zcash among the strongest-performing large-cap cryptocurrencies in the current market.

But the price move is occurring alongside a significant development on the Zcash network.

Zcash Prepares for 25-Second Blocks

Zcash developers are targeting November 5 for the activation of Network Upgrade 7, or NU7. The upgrade would reduce the network’s target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, potentially cutting the average waiting time for a first confirmation by about two-thirds.

The proposed change is particularly relevant to Zcash because faster confirmation times could make shielded transactions more practical for payments, exchange deposits and other applications where users need a transaction to settle quickly.

The underlying proposal says the 25-second target could reduce first-confirmation latency from an average of 75 seconds to 25 seconds. It also outlines changes that could more than double Orchard throughput under the proposed action limits.

That does not mean Zcash will suddenly become a high-throughput blockchain. Rather, the immediate objective is to reduce transaction waiting time while increasing the network’s available block capacity.

Holders Back the Faster Network

The proposed change has already received strong support in a recent Zcash governance poll.

Nearly 2.4 million ZEC participated in the vote, with about 99.9% of participating coins supporting the reduction in target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Around 98.9% also supported maintaining the existing halving schedule.

The governance result gives developers a clearer path toward NU7, although the final activation decision is still scheduled for October 20, ahead of the proposed November 5 mainnet activation.

Another important component of NU7 concerns Zcash’s long-term mining economics. The proposal would temporarily set aside around 60% of transaction fees, with those funds scheduled to return as mining rewards beginning in 2031. The change is designed to preserve the network’s existing issuance and halving structure while adjusting how rewards are distributed over time.

Institutional Demand Adds Another Layer

The network upgrade is not the only development attracting attention to Zcash.

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, ZCSH, has accumulated substantial assets since beginning trading on NYSE Arca in August. Recent data puts the fund’s assets at roughly $900 million, with investor inflows reaching hundreds of millions of dollars since launch.

Grayscale has now announced a 3-for-1 forward split for ZCSH. Shareholders of record on September 28 are scheduled to receive two additional shares for every share held, with split-adjusted trading expected to begin September 30. The split does not change the underlying exposure or net asset value of the fund; it simply reduces the price per ETF share.

The timing is notable because ZEC has roughly doubled over a short period, while the ETF has continued to attract attention from investors seeking regulated exposure to the privacy-focused asset.

Why the Rally Matters

Zcash’s latest move therefore has several layers.

The first is technical momentum. ZEC has broken into fresh price territory after a prolonged period of weakness, with TradingView data showing gains of more than 170% over the past month.

The second is network development. NU7 is designed to make transactions faster and improve the efficiency of Zcash’s shielded ecosystem.

The third is institutional access. The arrival of a U.S.-listed Zcash ETF gives traditional investors a new route to gain exposure to ZEC without directly holding the cryptocurrency.

Together, these developments are changing the market narrative around Zcash from simply being an established privacy coin to a network undergoing both infrastructure upgrades and greater integration with traditional investment markets.

What Could Determine ZEC’s Next Move?

The immediate focus will likely remain on whether ZEC can maintain its gains after such a rapid rally.

A sustained move above the recent record would keep attention on the strength of demand behind the rally. Conversely, a sharp pullback would test whether the recent price appreciation has been supported by durable spot and institutional demand or by short-term momentum and leverage.

The NU7 timeline will also become increasingly important. The October 20 activation decision and proposed November 5 mainnet upgrade are the next major protocol milestones for Zcash.

For investors, the key question is therefore no longer simply whether ZEC can continue rising. It is whether the combination of faster transactions, growing institutional access and renewed interest in privacy-focused infrastructure can translate into sustained network demand.
