Edward Snowden on Decentralization, AI, and Open-Source Tools

Edward Snowden, a privacy advocate and former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, recently shared his views on decentralization, blockchain, and artificial intelligence (AI) at Near’s Redacted conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

At the conference, he discussed how venture capital (VC) funding affects the decentralization of blockchain networks, using Solana as an example of how financial backing might affect a project’s independence.

In addition, Snowden highlighted the importance of decentralization in safeguarding against AI-driven surveillance.

To this end, he emphasized the value of open-source tools for empowering individuals in an increasingly centralized digital space.

The Influence of Venture Capital on Blockchain Decentralization

During his presentation, Snowden illustrated with Solana on how significant venture capital involvement could limit a blockchain project’s autonomy. In his speech, he described Solana, which has received heavy VC funding, as “born in prison.” This suggest that too much financial backing can limit a network’s ability to operate independently.

He acknowledged that Solana has potential for growth. However, the privacy advocate went further by warning that too much influence from investors could constrain the network’s future.

Snowden referenced a recent example involving venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, which used its voting power to sway a decision on Uniswap, underscoring the potential control centralized stakeholders can wield over supposedly decentralized projects.

Decentralization as a Defense Against AI Surveillance

Snowden emphasized that decentralization could be a crucial shield against AI-enhanced surveillance. He has expressed concern about AI’s capacity to process vast amounts of personal data in real-time, warning that this could lead to large-scale live monitoring.

To this, he has described a future where corporations and governments might use AI to flag individuals who exhibit “unusual” behavior, painting a troubling picture of what centralized AI control might look like. For Snowden, decentralized technologies like blockchain offer a pathway to limit invasive monitoring practices.

To push back against centralized control, Snowden advocated for open-source technology, which he described as essential for empowering individuals. He explained that open-source tools give users the freedom and knowledge to use technology independently. Snowden encouraged everyone to adopt open-source models. He emphasizing that the model provides a unique opportunity for personal autonomy in a highly centralized technological landscape.
