Bitcoin Built the Digital Money Market. Can Zcash Capture the Privacy Premium?

Bitcoin has spent more than a decade establishing itself as the dominant digital asset. It introduced the idea that people could hold and transfer scarce digital money without relying on a central authority.

But Bitcoin’s success has also exposed a limitation: its blockchain is transparent.

Transactions can be viewed and analyzed on-chain. While wallet addresses do not directly display a person’s name, blockchain activity can potentially be linked to real-world identities through increasingly sophisticated analysis.

That creates an opening for another cryptocurrency.

Zcash was built with a similar monetary philosophy to Bitcoin but added something Bitcoin does not natively provide: stronger financial privacy.

And according to Grayscale Research, that difference could become increasingly valuable.

Bitcoin vs. Zcash: Similar Roots, Different Priorities

Zcash is not completely unrelated to Bitcoin. Grayscale describes it as an alternative implementation of Bitcoin, created in 2016. Both have a maximum supply of 21 million coins and use proof-of-work mining.

But their most important difference is what happens to transaction information.

Bitcoin’s blockchain is transparent. Anyone can inspect transaction activity on the network.

Zcash, meanwhile, uses zero-knowledge cryptography known as zk-SNARKs to allow users to make shielded transactions that can protect information such as the sender, recipient and amount. Users can also choose whether transactions are transparent or shielded.

That gives the two networks different propositions.

Bitcoin is primarily competing as a scarce, decentralized store of value. Zcash is trying to combine similar monetary characteristics with financial privacy.

Why Grayscale Thinks Zcash Could Benefit

This is where Grayscale’s recent thesis becomes interesting.

In an August 19 research report titled “Zcash: Financial Privacy in the Age of AI,” Grayscale argues that financial privacy could become more valuable as artificial intelligence makes it easier to analyze large amounts of financial and blockchain data.

Grayscale subsequently summarized the argument on X by saying Zcash has a potential “second-mover advantage” and a real opportunity to capture some of Bitcoin’s market share.

The idea is relatively simple.

Bitcoin arrived first and established the market for decentralized digital money. Zcash does not necessarily have to defeat Bitcoin at being Bitcoin. Instead, it can focus on an area where Bitcoin has a limitation: privacy.

As blockchain surveillance becomes more sophisticated, the ability to make transactions without exposing every financial detail could become more important.

Could Privacy Become an Investment Narrative?

For years, privacy has been a relatively niche feature in cryptocurrency.

But that could change if people begin to view financial information as something that deserves the same protection as other personal information.

Consider a future where AI systems can rapidly analyze blockchain activity and identify patterns connecting wallets, businesses and individuals.

In such an environment, financial privacy could become more than a feature for a small group of crypto users. It could become part of the broader value proposition of digital money.

That is the bet behind Zcash.

But it remains a bet.

Bitcoin Still Has the First-Mover Advantage

Zcash’s privacy technology does not automatically give it an advantage over Bitcoin.

Bitcoin has an enormous network effect. It has greater liquidity, much broader recognition and a deeply established ecosystem of exchanges, custodians, investors and financial products.

Grayscale itself has previously described Bitcoin as having a “first-to-market” advantage and the largest share of the digital-asset market.

Zcash therefore faces a difficult challenge.

It must convince users that privacy is important enough to overcome Bitcoin’s enormous lead.

There is also a practical question: privacy features only become valuable if people actually use them. Grayscale’s earlier filings noted that a significant portion of Zcash activity had historically remained unshielded, highlighting the difference between having privacy technology and achieving widespread privacy adoption.

Zcash May Not Need to Replace Bitcoin

Perhaps the most interesting conclusion is that Bitcoin and Zcash do not necessarily have to be enemies.

Bitcoin could continue serving investors who primarily want a scarce, decentralized asset, while Zcash could attract users who place a greater premium on transaction privacy.

In that scenario, Zcash would not need to “kill Bitcoin.”

It would simply capture part of a growing market for private digital money.

That appears to be the heart of Grayscale’s thesis: Bitcoin created the market, but later projects can identify needs that the first mover did not fully address.

Whether Zcash can actually capture meaningful Bitcoin market share remains uncertain. Its privacy technology, regulatory environment, liquidity and adoption will all matter.

But the question Grayscale is raising deserves attention.

If Bitcoin established digital scarcity, could Zcash establish financial privacy as the next important feature of digital money?
