Since early 2024, tokens associated with artificial intelligence (AI) agents have seen a sharp decline in value. However, according to CoinGecko data, some of the leading AI agent platforms, such as AI Rig Complex (ARC), ElizaOS (AI16Z), and Virtuals (VIRTUAL), have lost between 75% and 90% of their market value.
Though among the biggest winners at the end of 2024, these AI tokens are now among the hardest hit. To this end, the overall cryptocurrency market has fallen roughly 16% since its highs in January 2024, but tokens related to AI have fallen even more.
Falling AI Token Prices
AI tokens have faced a sharp decline, with their combined market value dropping from over $10 billion to around $6 billion. Memecoins tied to AI, such as Fartcoin, have also experienced major losses. Fartcoin, once a popular token in 2024, lost about 65% of its value in the past month and now has a market cap of roughly $430 million. Crypto trader Elon Money noted on the X platform that the price trends for tokens like AI16Z, ARC, and Fartcoin have been consistently downward, and many traders believe they may never return to their peak values.

One big reason for this decline is shifting liquidity. On January 18, former U.S. President Donald Trump launched his own memecoin called Official TRUMP (TRUMP), which quickly grabbed attention and soared to an $80 billion market cap in just one day. According to analysts, the hype around TRUMP took liquidity and interest away from other tokens, including AI agent tokens.
Long-Term Hope for AI Tokens
Despite the current downturn, some traders remain hopeful about the future of AI tokens. Elon Money pointed out that platforms like ElizaOS and AI Rig Complex have strong development teams and important partnerships with large blockchain projects.
AI agents are still expected to play a big role in Web3, helping launch new coins and interacting with users on blockchain networks. Asset manager VanEck even predicts that there will be more than 1 million AI agents on blockchain networks by the end of 2025, showing long-term growth potential for these technologies.
